This keeps you safe from incoming attacks when charging your phials. When your shield is charged, you can quickly get off a Super Amped Elemental Discharge attack from when the weapon is sheathed. This will allow you to do a big amount of damage for when there is only a small window of opportunity to do so. This attack cancel is useful if you want to save up some of your phials for a better opportunity later on in the fight.
This is a great combo to remember since you can get a lot of attacks off from when your weapon is sheathed.
Remember that your shield needs to have energy stored within it to execute the super amped attack! So okay, the Lance is a really good weapon, but I just have a hard time picking it over the Gunlance at this point in my Hunting career.
That being said, I still prefer the gunlance. You can compensate for the lack of strong defensive moves by just knowing how to maneuver around the Monster your fighting. And the tradeoff is a lot ways do good damage. This does make the Gunlance a higher skill weapon I will admit.
As you will need to constantly reload and resharpen your weapon, and its longer combos -- while the most damaging -- leave you open for a while.
But like with most everything in Monster Hunter World, you'll eventually learn when the times to back out of a combo is, and just how much you can get away with before you get hit. But since those attacks ignore Monster hardpoints, the preference is gonna be on a person to person basis. Let's talk about Armor skills that would specifically benefit both weapons.

If you just learn how to better manage your stamina then neither of these skills are needed. Guard and Guard Up I would not consider using for either as you can manage just fine without having reduced Stagger from blocking, and any unblockable attack is usually telegraphed in advance so you can dive to the floor - Such as Nergigante's Divebomb, Teostra's Supernova, etc.
Gunlance's armor skills however, include Artilley - which directly increases Shelling damage AND reduces Wyvernfire cooldowns. And Capacity Boost - which adds another round to your Shelling total before you need to reload. These two actively increase how much dps you can output in a fight. Does that make Gunlance objectively better? They both are completely different playstyles that just so happen to share the same framework.
If your looking to cleverly counter the Monster behind a strong wall - Pick Lance. Wanna fight more aggressively but still keep the giant shield to hide behind - Grab a Gunlance. But from having played the game for a while now, knowing what to expect and where to position myself with most monster, I can comfortably trade in my defensive for more damage potential.
I could've moved up to the Great Sword since its far more powerful if used correctly, and with a block that is just as good. But I'm trash with it.
